Areca palm, scientifically known as Dypsis lutescens or Chrysalidocarpus lutescens, is also known as the butterfly palm due to its fronds resembling a butterfly. Its native habitat is Madagascar. This palm is excellent for filling home corners with its outward-tilting leaves. It can be distinguished from other indoor palm varieties like the Kentia or parlor palm by its dense and compact fronds arranged in a consistent line around the stems, unlike the two aforementioned types whose fronds are wide and spaced out. The Areca palm is considered an air-purifying plant according to a study conducted by NASA in the 1980s, which increased its popularity. Fifty plants were studied for their ability to add humidity to the surrounding air and purify it, and for their ease of care. The Areca palm scored first in all these criteria, in addition to being non-toxic to humans or pets.
Care
Areca palms grow to approximately 2 to 3 meters. Its new branches grow directly from the roots, making them full. Generally, they are slow-growing plants. They require very bright light without direct sun. Room temperature is suitable for them, approximately 18 to 27 degrees Celsius.
Do not water until the top surface of the soil dries, as continuous moisture can cause root rot. Areca palms are moisture-loving plants, so it is preferable to spray the leaves with water regularly. The pot should be changed to a larger one when it becomes root-bound, which is typically every two to three years.
If the surrounding atmosphere is dry, it may be susceptible to spider mites, and therefore needs frequent spraying with water. Its leaves may turn yellow or develop brown spots, which means that its soil is dry, or it has received excessive fertilizer, or salts have accumulated on the soil. Fertilize the Areca with an all-purpose fertilizer once a month, except during the dormant period in winter.
Propagation
By seeds or division, but these methods are difficult for home growers.
