Echeveria pulidonis: A beloved Mexican species cherished for its shape, colors, and ease of growth. This slow grower features oblong blue-green leaves that gently curve to form a neat rosette. These leaves are also covered in a dusty, silvery wax called farina. When grown in bright sunlight, the leaf margins boast a delicate crimson outline that contrasts beautifully with the soft blue tones. It sends up a tall stem from which bell-shaped yellow flowers dangle.
Echeverias require bright sunlight to maintain their vibrant colors and compact rosette shape. They will not survive severe frost, but if there's a risk of freezing temperatures, they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny windowsill or under a grow light.
Like most succulents, they need good drainage and infrequent watering to prevent rot. Choose containers with drainage holes and use a well-draining cactus and succulent soil containing 50% to 70% gritty mineral such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out of the drainage hole, then wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again.
Also known as "Mexican Hens and Chicks," Echeveria can produce new offsets or "chicks" around the base of the mother plant. These chicks can be left to form a neat cluster or removed and planted. Additionally, Echeveria can be propagated from stem cuttings or mature leaves. Refer to our Succulent Cuttings Guide for more information.
