Standard dry powder fire extinguishers are called "ABC" extinguishing devices because they are suitable for Class A, Class B, and Class C fires, but they are not recommended for use in enclosed spaces, due to the ease of inhaling the powder and the difficulty of removing its residue during cleaning.

Among the most important uses of a dry powder fire extinguisher is to extinguish flammable materials caused by flammable solids such as wood, paper, and fabric; flammable liquids such as gasoline, turpentine, or paint; and flammable gases such as hydrogen, butane, or methane.

It is not recommended for use in fires involving cooking oil, fires involving electrical appliances, or fires in enclosed spaces such as properties and offices.
